INTRODUCTION to the Index To How To Do It Information

The HTDI Index is a guide to locating magazine articles that contain how-to information, instructions, plans, suggestions and tips on how to solve and prevent problems, construct projects, pursue an art, craft, hobby, etc.

The HTDI Index uses a controlled list of more than 6,000 subject headings. The user is assisted in locating the correct subject heading by means of more than 12,000 cross references and a corresponding number of tracings.

Major subject areas covered in the HTDI Index include AIRCRAFT, AMATEUR RADIO, ARTS & CRAFTS, ASTRONOMY, BOATING, CLOTHING, COMPUTERS, CYCLING, DRAWING & PAINTING, ELECTRONICS, FIBER ARTS, FURNITURE, GARDENING, HOUSE & HOME, LAPIDARY, MODELS & MINIATURES, PHOTOGRAPHY, SCIENCE, TOOLS and WOODWORKING.

The HTDI Index is arranged in alphabetical order by subject heading. Under each subject heading are brief descriptions of magazine articles which deal with that subject. (Read the ORGANIZATION page for additional information on the arrangement of data within the HTDI Index).

A listing of magazine titles and issues that have been cited in the HTDI Index is incorporated into the Union List of magazines. Issues reviewed for articles to include in the HTDI Index are identified by “HTDI” on a yellow background in the column labeled “Indexed”.

SUBJECT HEADING SEARCHES
The BEST way to search for information within the HTDI Index is to search by subject heading as follows:

1. Think of a subject. Click on the “Search the HTDI Index” label at the top of the page.
2. Select the first letter of your subject from the “ A-Z Subject Heading Guide” label at the top of the page.
3. Scan the subject headings beginning with that letter until you find the subject you are looking for.
4. Click it. You will then be shown all of the entries relating to that subject along with cross references and tracings to related subjects.

KEYWORD SEARCHES
Results from a keyword search will depend upon the way you structure the search that uses the Zoom Search Engine ® .

1. If you search for the words PINE HUTCH with the ‘match ANY search words’ criteria, it will return all subject headings where one or more entries contain EITHER word.
2. If you search for the words PINE HUTCH with the ‘match ALL search words’ criteria, it will return all subject headings where one or more entries contain BOTH words.
3. If you search for the phrase "PINE HUTCH" (using quotation marks), it will return just the subject headings where one or more entries contain the EXACT phrase.

However you search, it still remains for the user to select a subject heading and read through the entries to locate the desired information. Using the ‘Find on this page’ search function in your browser may speed the process of scanning a long list of entries for the word or phrase being sought.
