AVAILABILITY:  A published index. A subscription to the current year (consisting of 12 monthly issues and an annual cumulation) costs $90. Annual cumulations are still available for prior years. 1945-1978 cost $62 per year. 1979 costs $90. Beginning in 1980, the Index to the Christian Science Monitor (1979-Current) will be available on-line from SDC (Santa Monica CA).
SCOPE OF INDEX:  This is an index to all four regional editions of the newspaper. These editions are coded in the "EDT" field in the citation portion of each entry. An article which appeared on the same page and column in each edition of the newspaper is shown as "ALL". Articles which appeared on different pages and columns in the different editions are coded as follows: E=Eastern edition; NE=New England edition MW=Midwest edition; W=Western edition. A number of columns can be located in this index under their titles. These include: Around the Garden; Ask a Builder; Energy Q&A; Home Forum; Moneywise; Parent & Child; and Week on Wall Street. Editorial columnists can be located under their bylines as well as the subject of their columns. The index covers most articles and personal names which appear in the paper, except metaphysical articles and most advertisements.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  The index is a book form index printed on 8�x11 inch pages, two columns per page, consisting of reduced size computer output (all upper case). The index is divided into two sections: GENERAL SUBJECTS and PERSONAL NAMES. Within each section the order is alphabetical by subject or name. Within each subject the order is chronological. Entries consist of a brief description of the article, usually not the headline, followed by the citation. The citation consists of the month ,day, edition, page, and a description code. The description codes are as follows: * = Photo, illustration or chart C = Editorial column or cartoon E = Editorial L = Letter to the editor R = Review
SIZE OF INDEX:  An estimated 3,000 to 4,000 entries per month in the current index.
