AVAILABILITY:  For the period 1967-1977, the index is a card file index which must be used in the Public Library of Nashville and Davidson County. Beginning in 1978, the index was produced with the aid of a computer. Microfiche copies of the annual indexes for 1978-date are available from Microfilming Corp. of America (3 Park Ave., New York NY 10016). Plans are being considered to make the earlier indexes available on microfiche if and when that information is computerized.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  We cover all significant local and state events, excluding society news. The approach is by subject, with more prominent individuals entered by name. Letters-to-the-editor, cartoons, and book reviews are not indexed. Categories having extensive coverage include: ELECTIONS; POLITICS; CRIME; FUEL; TENNESSEE CITIES; HANDICRAFT; MUSIC; MEDICAL SERVICE; EDUCATION; TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY; RESORTS; PARKS; HOMES; BUILDINGS; and OBITUARIES.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index from 1967-1977. A computer printout since 1978. Also available on microfiche since 1978. The arrangement of the index is alphabetical with subjects and personal names interfiled. The entry consists of the headline, augmented by pertinent names. The citation consists of the name of the paper, date (mo/day/yr), section and page number. Accompanying illustrations are noted.
SIZE OF INDEX:  About 250 entries per month are added to the current index.
