SCOPE OF INDEX:  The index was compiled by students under the direction of Martin Kaufman, Ph.D., Professor of History at Westfield State College. Material is arranged by subject headings, some of which have been subdivided. Dr. Kaufman's goal is to continue this index to 1900.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  This is a handwritten 3x5 card file index, although some cards have been typed. Entries contain a brief description of the article or editorial, the month, day, year, page, and column.
