NOTE:  This is not an index within the definition of LATHROP REPORT ON NEWSPAPER INDEXES. Mr. Parshall clipped obituaries from 181 years of the Manhattan Mercury newspaper. He then placed them in alphabetical order onto 81-xll inch pages (over 1,500 such pages contain the obituaries of 8,550 persons). An index was created to those pages giving the name, year of birth, year of death and the page number in his clipping file where the obituary appears. The index and the pages of clippings were then microfilmed onto 16mm film. Copies are available for $15 per copy.
