NOTE:  A grant proposal to fund the indexing of all newspapers published in Galveston and Harris Counties (Texas) from 1836 -1900 was being investigated by Rice University historians in 1974. This "archives" project never materialized and was reported to be transferred to the Houston Public Library. Houston Public Library has indicated to the editor that no index to local newspapers has been compiled by them.
