SCOPE OF INDEX:  A general index to books and periodicals, including newspapers. Indexes Californina-related subjects only.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index. Classified by broad subject areas (animals, artists, indians, murders,...etc.), but also includes personal and place names interfiled in the same alphabet. The entry consists of a headline, phrase, keyword or other appropriate description. The citation consists of all required bibliographic information to locate the source document, whether book, magizine, newspaper, etc. "POR" indicates a portrait; "CUT" indicates an illustration.
SIZE OF INDEX:  Over 800,000 entries in the index. About 5,000 new entries are added each year.
