AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the library. Corresponding microfilm of the newspapers is available for the ENQUIRER, the POST and the POST & TIMES-STAR. All other papers are bound and in fragile condition and are not available for use except in rare cases.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  Indexing is selective, although we try to be comprehensive in our indexing of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. State and National news items are also indexed if they have a direct relationship to the County. Besides major news, indexing also includes articles on local centenarians, major sports events, reviews of books written by local authors, reviews of major artistic events, obituaries and some editorials. The index does not cover the Standard Metropolitan Statistical area, but here it is very selective and includes only major news items (e.g., Beverly Hills nightclub fire). A special feature of the index is the inclusion of local World War 2 casualties. Names of casualties are interfiled in the index. Excluded from the index are death notices, advertising, regular columns (health, food,...), feature articles by local reporters on a general topic not particularly relevent to this locale, and minor crimes, fires, etc.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file with both subjects and personal names interfiled in the same alphabetical order. Each card represents one subject and will contain one or more entries. Each entry consists of the headline or brief description plus the citation (code for the newspaper, month, day, year, section, page and column). Illustrations which accompany an article are noted as follows: chart, illus., map, photo, and por. (portrait).
SIZE OF INDEX:  Currently there are about 432,000 cards in the index, representing 1,728,000 entries on 36,400 different subjects.
