AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of the index existed in handwritten form, on special forms, as of Oct 1977. The plan was to make the index available in a printed format after January 1978.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  Emphasis is on local news and news of Northeastern Minnesota and the Iron Range. Indexing also includes some articles on Superior (Wisconsin), local columnists, Reserve Mining Case, and the Boundry Waters Canoe Area. Omitted are obituaries (unless a well known local person), advertising and most sports news.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  Data is being collected on 3x5 inch paper slips which are kept in alphabetical order by subject. There is on entry per slip consisting of the headline, the year, month, day, section and page. A letter code indicates the newspaper and an asterisk (*) indicates an illustration accompanied the article. Plans are to produce the index using some form of typesetting or print out device.
SIZE OF INDEX:  Approximately 1350 entries per month are added to the index.
