Kares; Joyner Library; East Carolina University; Greenville NC 27834. The News & Observer Index, 1974 was published in microfiche in 1980. Copies are available for $5 from the address above. A 1980 index will be produced on microfiche. The index and microfilm copies of the paper are both available for public use in the Joyner Library, East Carolina University.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  The index was begun as a research aid for the East Carolina University community. Coverage is generally limited to North Carolina news, but national subjects are included when they relate to the state. Stories are generally entered by subject rather than place. Initially the index was highly selective with emphasis on biography, education, politics and government, and controversial issues. Coverage has become progressively more comprehensive so that currently most subjects except social news and athletics are covered. In 1973 the index was revised using, where applicable, the subject headings in The New York Times Thesaurus. Until this revision, biographical material was entered under the heading BIOGRAPHY or an individual's name. In the 1974 index all biographical entries are under the heading PEOPLE. In the 1980 index, names are interfiled with other subjects.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  The printed edition (1967-1973) was apparently issued as seven separate annual indexes, each one an alphabetical index by subject. The seven indexes totaled 551 pages and were bound into four volumes. The entries consist of the headline plus the month, day, section and page of the article being indexed. (NOTE: The absence of any year indicator in the citation or at the start of each set of entries or at the top of the sample page has led the editor to the conclusion that each year of the index is a separate entity.)
