AVAILABILITY:  An estimated 500-700 copies of this index were printed. A limited number are still available at $5 each from the Alaska State Library (Historical Monograph No. 3). The index may be used in the Alaska State Library. It is also available on interlibrary loan from the Alaska State Library or the depository library system.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  For the period 1885-1907, THE ALASKAN was the only newspaper published in Alaska. Serving the entire district, it provided readers with detailed information on matters of historical importance. This included information on the custom and life of Alaska's native people, the history of the Russian church, development of Alaska's schools and gold mining in Alaska. The newspaper was also a primary-source of information concerning boats and ships coming to Alaska, as well as local (Sitka) information.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  The index is arranged in four sections: GENERAL SUBJECTS; PEOPLE; SITKA AREA SUBJECTS; and VESSELS (boats, ships,...). Within each section, subjects and/or names are arranged in alphabetical order. Entries consist of a brief description of the article, followed by the month, day, year and page where the article appeared. Entries are arranged in chronological order within each subject. The index consists of 107 pages (8½x11 inches), spiral bound.
SIZE OF INDEX:  There are over 9000 entries in the index.
