SCOPE OF INDEX:  Indexing is limited to local news or local ramifications of state and national news. Includes obituaries and (after 1974) includes weddings and births. Attempt is made to include areas of business and industry, civic affairs, school administration news, cultural life, social services, agriculture, health, local history, feature articles and politics. The intent is to make available access to events of lasting significance to the growth and development of Galesburg. Excluded from the index is most sports coverage, club meetings and school affairs.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A book-form index, handwritten on 8½x11 inch sheets and arranged in alphabetical order by subject in 3 ring binders. Each year of the index is in a separate binder. At the top of each sheet is typed the subject heading and the year. Entries are then handwritten in chronological order down the sheet. Each entry begins with a "keyword" which is printed in a darker or heavier style, followed by the headline and the citation. The citation consists of the month, day and page number. The vital statistics entries (births, deaths and weddings) are typed onto sheets once per year and placed into the binder. A list of subject headings used during the year is placed at the front of each binder. Cross references are included in this list.
SIZE OF INDEX:  Approximately 500 entries per month are added to the index (exclusive of births, deaths and weddings).
