SCOPE OF INDEX:  This index of marriages and deaths is intended as part of a larger partially completed index which will embrace in detail information on island leaders, business, social and cultural life, transportation changes, population shifts and other events which shaped Long Island. This part of the index covers only marriages and deaths as reported in the Long Islander newspaper. NOTE: A second index of marriages and deaths for the years 1865-1880, compiled by Robert L. Simpson (town historian of Huntington) is mentioned in the introduction.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A book-form index of some 173 pages. Page size is 6x8½ inches and is spiral-bound. The index is divided into two sections. Marriages (104 pages) and deaths (69 pages). Each section is arranged in alphabetical order by name (last name first). Marriage entries include where the person was from, whom they married and where the marriage took place. Death entries include age, next of kin, hometown, place of death and place of burial. The citation indicates the date (day-month-year) of the newspaper plus the page and column where the article appeared.
