REPORT NO:  1105C Previous Report (1105B)  |  Next Report (1106A)
INDEX NAME:  Jersey Journal Index
NEWSPAPERS INDEXED:
  • JERSEY JOURNAL Jersey City NJ 1968(Jul 1)-Current
LOCATION or PUBLISHER: JERSEY CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY
New Jersey Room
472 Jersey Ave
Jersey City NJ 07302
Telephone: (201) 547-4503
AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the Jersey City Public Library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  The index covers matters of public interest occuring in Jersey City, Hudson County, state of New Jersey, and the New York metropolitian area (in that order of priority). Entries are made for both subjects and personal names. Death notices are indexed when the deceased had some measure of public recognition. Excluded from the index are high school and college sports, most professional sports and routine club news. NOTE: Occasionally other papers and earlier years were indexed for a special item. These other papers may include: Hudson Dispatch; Dispatch; Jersey Observer; New York Times; Newark Star-Ledger; Newark Evening News; and the Newark Sunday News Magazine.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index which uses colored cards to designate types of information. The WHITE cards are index entry cards. GREEN cards are filing guides or subject heading cards. However, there is NOT a green card for every subject heading. YELLOW cards are cross reference guides. Index cards are filled both by subject and by geography. For Hudson County and for each of the Hudson County municipalities, a separate alphabetic arrangement is used. For the rest of the index, no geographic prefix is used. Thus, an article on sports in Jersey City would be filed under JERSEY CITY--SPORTS. However, an article on sports from outside Hudson County would be filed under SPORTS. All of the entries on a single index card are from the same newspaper and year. A code for the paper (jj) and the year are shown in the upper right hand corner of the card. The entries are then arranged in chronological order on each card, starting with the month, day and page number, followed by the headline and (if necessary) an annotation.
SIZE OF INDEX:  About 800 entries per month are added to the current index, which occupies about 9 file drawers.
