AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the Beale Memorial Branch Library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  Begun in 1936, this subject index contains entries from all newspapers published in Kern County; however the BAKERSFILED CALIFORNIAN, as the leading paper of the county, is the one most extensivly indexed. Only extremely newsworthy or historic items are indexed from the newspapers of the smaller communities. All articles indexed pertain only to Kern County. State and national news is not indexed. Such subjects as historic events, people of prominence, pioneers, places of interest, governmental agencies, business, industries, and cultural activities are among those covered by the index.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index arranged in alphabetical order by subject and personal name. Entries consist of the headline and/or a brief description of the article, followed by the citation. The citation includes the name of the paper, the date (mo-dy-yr), the page and column. Illustrations are noted.
SIZE OF INDEX:  By the end of the fiscal year 1976-77, there were 55,869 cards in the index, with each card bearing as many as 3 entries. About 400 cards per month are added.
