SCOPE OF INDEX:  The goal of the index is to reflect the newsworthy happenings of government, education, the economy, social change, etc., of Lane County and Oregon. National events which have a strong local impact may also be cited. Personal names and business news of the local area are cited, including vital records.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A book-form index typewritten onto 8½x11 inch pages. The index is divided into three separate sections: BIOGRAPHY, BUSINESSES, and GENERAL SUBJECTS. Within each section, the arrangement is alphabetical by name or subject. The BIOGRAPHY and BUSINESSES sections use a special format (a special pre-printed page) which has columns for the following information: NAME (of person or business), CATEGORY (used to indicate personal events such as marriages, deaths, births,...etc.), ED (edition of paper), MO (month), DAY, SEC (section), PAGE, and SUMMARY (used to provide an annotation or headline). The GENERAL SUBJECTS section uses a different entry format. The headline or brief annotation is listed first followed by the month, day, month, page and column. The complete subject heading list for the index, along with all cross references, is printed on colored paper and bound into each annual volume. The user is refered to this list for help in locating the correct section and correct heading for the topic being searched.
SIZE OF INDEX:  Each of the annual indexes for 1970-1976 has about 6000 entries per year. The 1977 annual index has about 23,000 entries.
