AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of the card file index exists. It must be used in the library of Livingston University. There are plans to compile two years worth of cards into a typed book, which will be made available to other libraries. Write for details.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  The coverage area is Sumter County, primarily Livingston. Included are notable people in the area (awards, obituaries, other distinctions), accident reports of a serious nature, serious crimes, important civic matters (elections, annexations, hospitals, building projects,...), important local issues (Tenn.-Tom Bigbee Waterway, property taxes, labor disputes, some editorials concerning local issues), and weather related news (severe drought, heavy snow, gas shortages...). Excluded from the index are all state or national stories that are carried in the major newspapers, social news, most editorials and letters to the editor, regular columns on local matters and minor local news.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index arranged in alphabetical order by subject and personal name. There is one entry per card. Each entry consists of a brief description of the content of the article, followed by the citation. The citation indicates the date (mo/dy/yr), page and column. Accompanying photos or illustrations are also noted. Entries which are filed in more than one place have a tracing note on the bottom of the card.
SIZE OF INDEX:  From 12 to 15 entries per month are added to the current index.
