AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the Madison Public Library. Index is currently available only to library personnel.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  Major emphasis is on people, including their business activities, social activities, club memberships, obituaries, ... etc. The index also includes news of local events such as business openings, social occasions of major import, trends in transportation, major accidents, etc. Articles on historic homes and the activities of the many millionaires who once lived in the area are also being indexed. All articles on the school system and churches are indexed. The index's primary emphasis is the Madison area, but it does include some articles on the surrounding communities of Florham Park, Chatham Boro and Chatham Township. Madison's important rose industry has been thoroughly indexed. The index excludes birth and engagement announcements, weekly sports stories and social column.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index arranged in alphabetical order. The period 1882-1924 is completely indexed and edited onto cards. The 1925-1946 period is indexed, but not edited. Once compilation is completed, there will be a separate personal name index file. There may be more than one entry per card. Each entry consists of a brief description of the article, followed by the month, day, year, and page where the article appeared.
