AVAILABILITY:  Only two copies of this card file index exist. They must be used in the Local History Room of the Milwaukee Public Library (814 W. Wisconsin Ave, Milwaukee WI 53233).
SCOPE OF INDEX:  Covers all of the published information pertaining to Wisconsin persons, events, places and organizations for all the years in which these persons or subjects appeared in the news, in one alphabetical arrangement. National or foreign news items were omitted since they are covered conveniently elsewhere. Some of the topics covered by the index include: Civil war (106 subject headings) Wisconsin railroads (72 subject headings) Indians (35 subject headings) Milwaukee fire department (37 subject headings) Grand Army of the Republic In addition, entries not under a subject heading will be found under the names of individuals and companies, communities, tribes, and other "corporate" names.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index with both subjects and personal names interfiled in one alphabetical order. For the period 1837-1879, the entries have been typed onto 3x5 cards. For the period 1880-1890, the entries remain handwritten on 4x6 slips of paper. Plans are currently underway to type this portion of the index and interfile it into the other portion. Each card consists of the subject heading or personal name in the upper left hand corner and the abbreviation MS followed by the year in the upper right hand corner. Below are one or more entries arranged in chronological order. Each entry consists of a brief description of the article, followed by the citation (Month, day, page and column).
