This report is extracted from the 1000 Section (Confirmed Newspaper Indexes) of the 1979-1980 Edition of LATHROP REPORT ON NEWSPAPER INDEXES: An illustrated guide to published and unpublished newspaper indexes in the United States and Canada.   Either a compiler, publisher or repository had confirmed the existance of this index and supplied information for the report. See the INTRODUCTION for the methodology used in compiling the LATHROP REPORT.

REPORT NO:  1171A Previous Report (1170A)  |  Next Report (1172A)
INDEX NAME:  Palo Alto Times Index
NEWSPAPERS INDEXED:
  • PALO ALTO TIMES Palo Alto CA 1963-Current
LOCATION or PUBLISHER: PALO ALTO CITY LIBRARY
Reference Section
1213 Newell Rd
Palo Alto CA 94303
Telephone: (415) 329-2436
AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the Palo Alto City Library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  Indexes information about, taking place in, or affecting Palo Alto. Selective in that coverage excludes the ephemeral (social events) and any news about neighboring communities. Headings are general (eg. CITY COUNCIL is used rather than names of individual members). Does include area news of interest, such as county assessment practices. Basically it is a subject index. There are only a few dozen very newsworthy persons and organizations filed under their own name.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index arranged in alphabetical order by subject. There are several entries per card. Each entry consists of the headline (sometimes followed by clarifying phrases), followed by the month, day, year, page and column where the article appeared. Accompanying illustrations, portraits or maps are noted.
SIZE OF INDEX:  About 250 to 350 entries (35 to 45 cards) are added to the current index each month.
