SCOPE OF INDEX: Extensive name indexing of early PEI newspapers. The scope or extent of coverage varies somewhat depending on the year of the newspaper, as follows:1787-1849: Complete name index for PEI, That is, all names of persona connected with any island-based event were indexed. Names of P.E. Islanders abroad were also indexed.1850-1919: A vital statistics index, only. That is, only births, deaths, and marriages were indexed. |
FORMAT OF INDEX: A 3x5 card file index in alphabetical order by personal name. Cards for people with the same name are arranged in chronological order. There is only one entry per card. The card begins with the name, followed by the citation, and then a descriptive word or phrase about the person (optional). The citation consists of an abbreviation for the newspaper, the day, month, and year. Occasionally, the page number is noted. |
SIZE OF INDEX: About 100,000 entries in the current index. |
