AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the Providence Public Library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  A subject index to material on Providence and Rhode Island, including politics, history, banks, organizations, buildings, prominent persons, etc. Broad subjects such as schools, teachers, anti-poverty, ... are often subdivided geographically by city or town. Subjects headings are included for many city and state governmental agencies and positions. Excluded from the index are obituaries (except for people of prominence), letters to the editor (unless they pertain to the library), minor accidents, illustrations, and items concerned with social gatherings and activities of minor importance.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index. Entries are filed alphabetically by subject with general subjects, corporate names, personal names, and geographical names in a single A-Z file. State and city entries are divided into three sections: (1) Official agencies, (2) general subject subdivisions under the geographic name (e.g. RHODE ISLAND--HISTORY), and (3) Titles or corporate names beginning with the geographic name (e.g. RHODE ISLAND HOSPITAL TRUST). There are several entries on each card. An entry consists of the headline followed by the citation (newspaper code, month, day, year, and page). Editorials are noted with "Ed.".
