AVAILABILITY:  Originally created as a card file index, the cards have been microfilmed and reproduced in book format. The index is available for public use in the Rochester Public Library. Copies of the microfilm and/or xerographic reproductions from the microfilm may be purchased from University Microfilms, Reproduction Service Sustems (Ann Arbor MI 48106). Staff size does not permit extensive checking of the index by library personnel.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  13 newspapers were indexed for the period 1818-1850 and 5 during the period 1851-1897. The index is not inclusive of all Rochester papers published during this period. Subjects covered by the index include marriages, obituaries, business & government appointments, crimes, accidents, church dedications, election results, etc.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  Originally a 3x5 card file index, it is presently available in book format consisting of reproductions of eight 3x5 cards on each page of the book. The Rochester Public Library edition of the book has been bound into 83 volumes (total). The total index is divided into two parts. An alphabetical index covering 1818-1850 and a second alphabetical index covering 1851-1897. Each entry (card) consists of the subject heading or personal name at the top, followed by the headline or a brief description of the article, followed by the citation. The citation consists of a code for the newspaper, the date (month, day, year) and the page and column where the article appeared.
SIZE OF INDEX:  About 558,000 entries in the entire index.
