AVAILABILITY:  For the period 1843-1878 and 1958-1973, only one copy of the index exists. It is in card form and must be used in the Special Collection Department of Samford University Library. Since 1974, the index has been computer produced in book format. Annual editions will be made available on demand at $12 per year.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  The index is very comprehensive as regards news appearing in the paper. Personal names are indexed only if identification or substantive information about individuals is included. Letters to the editor, obituaries, and marriages are indexed. Advertisements are omitted. Since 1974, the indexing conforms to the guidelines established for the Baptist Information Retrieval System.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  1. A card file index for the period 1834-1878 and 1958-1973. Within each of these two card files, the entries are arranged in alphabetical order by subject or personal name. Entries consist of a brief description of the article followed by the citation. The citation consists of the day, month, year, page and column where the article appeared. 2. A book form index printed on 8½x11 inch pages since 1974. This index is published annually. Five year cumulations are planned. Within each annual index, the entries are arranged in alphabetical order by subject or personal name. Within each subject, the entries are in chronological order and consist of a brief description of the article, followed by the citation. The citation consists of the month, day, year, page, and column.
SIZE OF INDEX:  About 4,500 entries per year are added to the current index.
