SCOPE OF INDEX:  1. SANTA CLARA SUN and SANTA CLARA AMERICAN: Coverage varies, but focus is on Santa Clara city government, schools, organizations, local cultural events, business and some Santa Clara County news. Personal names are included, particularly those people active in community affairs. Obituaries are indexed from the Santa Clara AMERICAN. Club officers are listed under the name of the club. Golden wedding anniversaries and individual portraits are indexed by name. Group portraits are indexed under the name of the organization (group). Omitted from the index are marriages, births, military news, advertising, social news, letters to the editor, editorials, routine sports, hobbies, homemaking (unless a local resident is subject of a special article), movie reviews, TV reviews, and travel stories. 2. SANTA CLARA JOURNAL and SANTA CLARA NEWS: This index was compiled retrospectively. The coverage is more selective. Emphasis is on subjects with some personal names. Includes city, school, club and business news, plus obituaries.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index that is NOT a single A to Z index. There are separate indexes for each newspaper with separate A-Z indexes for each years worth of material. It may be possible that separate years and separate titles will be interfiled together in the future. Each card in the index consists of the subject heading, followed by an annotation describing the article, and ending with the citation. The citation consists of the date (month, day, year), page, and name of the paper.
SIZE OF INDEX:  200-400 entries per month are added to the current index. The total index occupies 19 drawers.
