NEWSPAPERS INDEXED:
  • SOUTH BEND TRIBUNE South Bend IN 1976-Current
LOCATION or PUBLISHER: SOUTH BEND PUBLIC LIBRARY
History & Travel Department
122 W. Wayne
South Bend IN 46624
Telephone: (219) 288-4413
AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the South Bend Public Library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  The emphasis is on comprehensive coverage of local news rather than selective coverage. State items are indexed more selectively. There is intensive coverage of St. Joseph county and the residents therein. Included are state and national news items which involve St. Joseph residents. There is extensive coverage of the state legislature during the times it is in session. Occasionally included are letters to the editor and editorials. Reviews of art exhibits, books by local authors, theater and other cultural events are indexed. Obituaries are indexed in a separate file, as are "service notes". Omitted from the index are vital statistics, most advertising, weddings, routine social events, and routine sports events.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index arranged in alphabetical order with both subjects and personal names interfiled in the same alphabet (except for obituaries which are separate). Each entry consists of the headline and/or a brief description of the article, followed by the citation. Each citation gives month, day, year, page and section (if necessary). Accompanying photos are indicated.
