AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the Stanislaus County Free Library. Cards may not be removed from the file for duplication.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  The emphasis of the index is on local news, local being defined as within the boundaries of Stanislaus County. Included are community activities and editorials on local concerns as well as news events. There are two biography/obituary files, one for the historical index and one for the current index. These list news items and obituaries about notable Stanislaus County residents. Omitted from the index are routine social and sports events, advertising, vital statistics columns, minor crimes, and accidents.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index divided into two sections: BIOGRAPHY/OBITUARY and SUBJECTS. Within each section, the cards are grouped by year and then alphabetically by subject or personal name. Entries consist of the headline plus the citation. The citation includes month, day, year, section, page, and column. Illustrations have been noted since 1978.
SIZE OF INDEX:  80 to 90 entries per day are added to the current index which presently contains over 120,000 entries.
