REPORT NO:  1219A Previous Report (1218I)  |  Next Report (1220A)
INDEX NAME:  Newspaper Index
NEWSPAPERS INDEXED:
  • North Dakota newspapers ? ND 1905-Current
LOCATION or PUBLISHER: STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF NORTH DAKOTA
Reading Room
Liberty Memorial Building
Bismarck ND 58505
Telephone: (701) 224-2666
AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  The index is a guide to topical material appearing in newspapers on historical subjects or subjects which may have historical impact in subsequent years. Topics include obituaries, politics, economics, historic markers, roads, cowboys, weather, ferry boats, rivers, Indian wars, Indian tribes, forts, etc. The index is by no means complete and it has not been maintained with any degree of regularity during the years. Hence, it is very good for some time periods and very poor for others. The index is quite difficult to work with if one expects to locate readily the information one wants. All newspapers published in North Dakota between 1905 and the present have been to some extent indexed. Entries have also been made for North Dakota newspapers published prior to 1905. The total number of newspapers included in the index is not known. However, many of the entries do refer to the major newspapers (FARGO FORUM, GRAND FORKS HERALD, MINOT DAILY NEWS, BISMARCK TRIBUNE) and other dailies.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index arranged alphabetically by subject (whether that be a name, place, subject, title, or whatever). There is one entry per card consisting of a sometimes lengthy description of the article plus the citation. The citation includes name of newspaper, date (mo-day-yr), and page. Accompanying photos are noted.
SIZE OF INDEX:  About 500 entries per month are added to the current index which totals over 30,000 cards.
