AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the Middle Tennessee State Univeristy Library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  This is an index to scattered issues of Rutherford County (Tennessee) newspapers that have been microfilmed. They cover a span from 1824 through 1858. Items of interest concerning Murfreesborough and Rutherford County people, places, and events have been included. National or state events and individuals were entered if these were somehow locally involved. Because of the lack of last names for slaves, the heading SLAVES is used. Within this heading, the first name of the slave plus the full name of the owner are shown for each entry. For other aspects of slavery, the heading SLAVERY is used. BLACKS is also used as a heading.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index with both subject and personal names interfiled in the same alphabetical order. Entries are usually very brief and may only consist of the name of the newspaper, the month, day, year and page number.
SIZE OF INDEX:  About 1650 entries in the entire index.
