AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the Spartanburg County Public Library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  This index includes news of Spartanburg and surrounding counties, plus South Carolina news of special importance. Local responses to national events are indexed. Relevent local editorials, feature articles of historical importance, articles and death notices on prominent Spartanburg and South Carolina persons, and library-related articles are indexed. Also included are unusual weather, fires, accidents, etc.; controversial and unusually important city and county council actions and state legislative actions. Weekly and daily columns are indexed under a heading for the column with the content noted, but without any further subject assignments. Excluded from the index are routine crime stories, trials, routine fires; routine weather; marriage, death and birth notices; routine announcements of meetings; club news; whimsical human interest stories; routine sports news; routine city and county council proceedings; letters to the editor; and national news.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index arranged in alphabetical order with both subjects and personal names interfiled. There are usually several entries per card consisting of a brief description of the article followed by the citation. The citation consists of the month, day, year, section, page and column. An asterisk (*) indicates that a photograph accompanies the article.
SIZE OF INDEX:  About 1400 entries per year are added to the current index.
