SCOPE OF INDEX:  The newspapers from Chico CA and Redding Ca are indexed for Tehama County articles only. The Red Bluff newspaper is indexed more comprehensively. The goal is to index as many of the early local papers as time will permit (back to 1857). Indexing emphasizes local (county) news. Regional news is indexed if it greatly affects the people of the county. Generally, news is taken if it meets one or more of the following criteria: good biographical information; major news item; historic significance; unusual news information; impacts local area; etc. Articles from the following broad topical areas are considered for indexing if they fit the criteria noted above: Businesses; Real estate; Marriages; Engagements; Church news; Organizations; Social or personal news; Performing arts; Vital statistics; Graduations, honor rolls, promotions, reunions; Weather, Sports (local); Military news; Editorials; School news; Crime; Civil suits; Streets and highways; Social life; Buildings; Individuals (by name); Letters to the editor; History; and Library news.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index arranged in alphabetical order with both subjects and personal names interfiled in the same alphabet. Subject cards begin with a broad topical area. More specific subheadings (such as the name of a business) may then appear on the card. This is then followed by one or more entries under that subheading. Each entry consists of a brief description of the article followed by a code for the newspaper, the month, day, year, section, page, and column. Special codes indicate illustrations, editorials, letters to the editor, and advertisements.
SIZE OF INDEX:  In 1976, approximately 1300 items per year were added to the file. More comprehensive indexing was started in 1977 which will add more entries per year.
