SCOPE OF INDEX: The index is highly selective and includes only West Alabama news. Included are obituaries, editorials, some letters to the editor, and all stories containing biographical information about West Alabamians. Excluded from the index are national press (wire service) stories, all stories in the sports section, social news, advertising, cartoons, comic strips, and announcements. |
FORMAT OF INDEX: A 3x5 card file index in alphabetical order with both subjects and personal names interfiled in the same alphabet. There is one entry per card consisting of the subject heading, the headline (or brief annotation), and the citation. Tracings at the bottom of the card show where else this same entry was filed. The citation consists of the month, day, year, section (when applicable), and page where the article appeared. Two asterisks (**) indicate that the two-star edition was being indexed. Illustrations, maps, and portraits are also noted. |
SIZE OF INDEX: About 5,000 entries per year are added to the current index. |
