SCOPE OF INDEX:  For the ARKANSAS GAZETTE, the emphasis is on being comprehensive regarding state and local news. Included in the index are articles on politics, education, society, history, prominent people, description and society, history, prominent people, description and travel, parks & playgrounds, mountains, lakes, etc. Omitted from the index are national or international news, obituaries, oil discoveries, weddings, recipes, letters to the editor, reviews of books (or films, concerts, theater, etc), editorials, vital statistics, routine social and sports news, and non-news items about hobbies and home making. NOTE: Some issues of the ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT were indexed 1951-?. Various campus publications are indexed, including: ARKANSAS TRAVELLER, SPECTRUM, and GRAPEVINE. Also included in the index is the NEWS RELEASE of the Arkansas Dept. of Parks & Tourism (1965-Current) and the NORTHWEST ARKANSAS TIMES. The ARKANSAS GAZETTE has been indexed most thoroughly beginning in 1950.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index in alphabetical order with both subjects and personal names interfiled in the same alphabet. The index is divided into two chronological parts, because the current year being indexed is kept separate from the rest of the index until the year is finished and the entries have been reviewed. There is one entry per card consisting of the subject heading, headline (or title) of article, name of newspaper, date (month, day, year) and page. Many of the articles included in the index are also clipped for a vertical file. If so, then the heading of the file folder in which this article will be found is typed at the bottom of the card.
SIZE OF INDEX:  The entire index currently occupies 33 file drawers with a maxium of 1000 cards per drawer. About 250 to 300 cards per year are added to the current index.
