  • GRAND RAPIDS HERALD Grand Rapids MI ?-1959

AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the Michigan Room of the Grand Rapids Public Library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  A subject index with emphasis on Grand Rapids, Kent County, and (to a lesser extent) Michigan. The index gives coverage to city, county, and state government activities; Activities of surrounding cities and towns; and such general subjects as Crime, Sports, Churches, Historic sites, Accidents, Women, etc. NOTE: This index takes a subject approach only. There are no personal names used as subject headings. However, the library does maintain a second card file index called a PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHY FILE. This does include references to the Grand Rapids press, and would include citations to major articles about a person which appeared in the newspaper.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  This is a 5x8 card file index with entries typed on both sides of the card. Each card holds about 40 entries. The subject heading appears in the upper left hand corner of the card. Entries are arranged in chronological order and consist of the headline and a citation. The citation includes a code for the paper, month, day, year, page, and section.
SIZE OF INDEX:  It is estimated that each newspaper is the source for 15 entries, with about 450 entries per month or 5500 per year. There are approximately 225,000 entries in the total index.
