See the INTRODUCTION for the methodology used in compiling the LATHROP REPORT.

REPORT NO:  1261A Previous Report (1260A)  |  Next Report (1262A)
INDEX NAME:  The Des Moines Register Index
NEWSPAPERS INDEXED:
  • DES MOINES REGISTER Des Moines IA 1965(Sep)-1976(Jun 30)
LOCATION or PUBLISHER: UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA
Library
Cedar Falls IA 50613
Telephone: (319) 273-2838
AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the University of Northern Iowa library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  The emphasis of this index was on educational, governmental, and legislative activities in Iowa. Major social, cultural, historical, and economic events in Iowa were given serious consideration. Almost without exception, the articles indexed were related to the curriculum and educational interests of the University of Northern Iowa community. All editorials, regardless of subject, were indexed. Omitted from the index were obituaries, routine social and sports events, and most national news. Indexing ceased when Iowa State University (Ames IA) made available a computer-produced index to the Des Moines Register.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  This is a 3x5 card file index. The Readers's Guide to Periodical Literature was used as the subject authority. There are some personal names included as subjects. These are interfiled with general subjects in a single alphabetical order. Multiple entries have been typed on each card. The entry statement was a brief description of the article (usually not the headline) followed by the month, day, year, section, page, and column where the article appeared. Notations were generally made for photos, maps, numerical tables, etc.
SIZE OF INDEX:  About 5500 entries per year were added to the index while it was being produced.
