AVAILABILITY:  This index consists of the handwritten slips of paper which were compiled during the WPS indexing project and were never transcribed into any other format. As such, they are kept in the closed stacks and are available only to serious researchers, and only in the Youngstown Public Library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  This is a selective index of Ohio news and opinion. Material that has been omitted from the index includes national and foreign news, advertisements, announcements of routine organization meetings and sports events, commercial and promotional publicity, features or columns of non-news items, vital statistics, incorporations, radio program schedules, time table, theater schedule, stock and bond quotations, non-news items relating to recipes (menus, household hints, etc.), poetry and fiction, reprints, reviews of burlesque and radio performances, society personals, and touring maps and information.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  This index is handwritten on 4x6 inch slips of paper. The writing is in light pencil. The slips are filed together in shoeboxes. A shoebox contains only one newspaper, and the name of the newspaper appears ONLY on the outside of the shoebox. Within each shoebox, the entries are either in alphabetical order by subject, or in chronological order, depending on the newspaper. Each slip of paper contains the month, day, page, column, and year at the top of the slip. This is followed by the subject heading assigned to that slip, and then the headline or a brief description of the article. A circled number in the lower left hand corner of the slip indicates the number of cross references used with that entry. Those cross references are listed on the reverse side of the slip.
SIZE OF INDEX:  There are approximately 745,000 entries in 591 shoeboxes.
