  • DAILY CHRONICLE & SENTINEL Augusta GA 1861;1863-1866;1868-1873
COMPILER:  A Works Progress Administration (WPA) project done in cooperation with the City of Augusta, the Augusta Chronicle newspaper and the Young Men's Library Association.
LOCATION or PUBLISHER: AUGUSTA REGIONAL LIBRARY
902 Greene St
Augusta GA 30902
Telephone: (404) 724-1871
AVAILABILITY:  Copies of the typed Digests are available for use at the Augusta Regional Library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  The WPA project goal was to transcribe the files of the Augusta Chronicle to preserve their contents and to reduce them to convenient volumes for the use of the public. Emphasis was on local material in order to produce a newspaper "history" of Augusta and environs and, to a lesser extent, of Georgia. During transcription, an effort was made to preserve the flavor of the original article, including old words and constructions, spelling, punctuation and even errors. Only proper names of significance to the purpose of the project were included in the Digest.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  Each year is in two volumes. Volume 1 consists of sometimes lengthy abstracts of news articles, arranged by broad subject categories. Within each subject, the abstracts are in chronological order. The citation indicates newspaper name, month, day, year, page and column. Whenever editorials or advertisements are included, an "ed" or "adv" flags them. The number of column inches which the news article occupied in the paper is also shown. Volume 2 is an index to the remaining news stories which were not abstracted in Volume 1. This is primarily an index to non-local material or trivial local news not otherwise included in Volume 1.
