AVAILABILITY:  Thirty-four drawers of 3x5 cards covering the period 1880-1883 and 1956-1965 are located in the Austin Public Library. The indexes for 1871-1875 and 1973-Current are stored in punched card format. Computer listings are available for use in the Austin Public Library. Conversion of the 3x5 cards to the punched cards is being considered.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  The index cites only those articles about Austin or Travis County or relate to this locality or the residents. National and state news is not indexed unless tied specifically to this area. Early newspaper cite all local news items including advertisements, want ads, marriages, death, sexton's reports, police reports, club meetings and any article mentioning a person, place or event connected with Austin or Travis County. Current newspaper indexes are more selective. Only outstanding crimes are indexed. Deaths are limited to violent deaths and deaths of newsworthy persons. Obituaries are not usually indexed. Sports is limited to outstanding events or local people who become nationally known competitors. Omitted are advertisements, club meeting announcements and legal notices.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  There are two sections to the index, subject and personal names. The entry consists of a brief annotation, usually not the headline. The citation indicates the date, edition, section, page and column. An asterisk (*) indicates that an illustration accompanies the article.
SIZE OF INDEX:  Approximately 15 entries per newspaper are added to the current index.
