AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the Erie City and County Library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  Technically this is an index to 27 scrapbooks of newspaper clippings kept by the Erie City and County Library. These scrapbooks cover the following subjects: BIOGRAPHY, CHURCHES, COUNTY, IMPORTANT EVENTS, INDUSTRY, LIBRARY, PRESQUE ISLE PENNINSULA and WORLD WAR 2 & SERVICEMEN. Normally such an index would not qualify for inclusion in the LATHROP REPORT ON NEWSPAPER INDEXES. However, many of the citations in the index include a reference to the name of the newspaper, date, section and page where the article originally appeared. Therefore, a portion of the index may be used with microfilm copies of the newspapers in addition to the scrapbooks.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index in alphabetical order, including both subjects and personal names. All of the cards are handwritten. Entries consist of the headline or brief description of the article. The citation can take two forms. The earlier entries list the letter (or title) of the scrapbook and the page number in the scrapbook where the article will be found. Later entries indicate the name of the newspaper, the date and page where the article appeared.
SIZE OF INDEX:  8 file drawers of cards.
