SCOPE OF INDEX:  A yearly compilation, the Daily Journal Index was begun in 1915 as an internal reference aid for librarians. It is a partial index of news items pertaining to Elizabeth, general items about Union County and major items about New Jersey. It does not contain obituaries, except for the most prominent Elizabeth or Union County residents, nor does it contain social items, sports records, or crimes in general.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index (actually 3x5 slips of paper, many of the older ones in a faded and crumbling state). The slips are arranged in alphabetical order by subject within one of three broad geographic files: 1. Elizabeth NJ 2. Union County NJ 3. New Jersey (state) At the top of each slip is the geographic file name, the subject heading and the year. One or more entries are arranged in chronological order on each slip. All of the entries are handwritten. Each entry consists of the citation (mo-dy-page) followed by the headline. All of the entries on a single slip are from the same year.
SIZE OF INDEX:  About 300 entries per year are added to the index.
