INDEX NAME:  The Greensboro Daily News and Greensboro Record Newspaper Index.
NEWSPAPERS INDEXED:
  • GREENSBORO DAILY NEWS Greensboro NC 1974-Current
  • GREENSBORO RECORD Greensboro NC 1974-Current
LOCATION or PUBLISHER: GREENSBORO PUBLIC LIBRARY
201 N. Greene St
PO Drawer X-4
Greensboro NC 27402
Telephone: (919) 373-2471
AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the Greensboro Public Library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  Included in this index are all articles of state and local interest. Only those national articles which involve North Carolina or North Carolinians are included. There is extensive local coverage of the Greensboro, Guilford County area. There is selective indexing of obituaries, social and sports events. Editorials, reviews and advertising are not indexed.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 5x8 card file index divided into five distinct sections: NORTH CAROLINA GENERAL SUBJECTS; NORTH CAROLINA COUNTIES; NORTH CAROLINA TOWNS; NORTH CAROLINA BIOGRAPHY; and GUILFORD COUNTY GENERAL SUBJECTS. Within each of the five sections, the cards are arranged in alphabetical order by subject. Each 5x8 card consists of the name of the file in the upper left hand corner and the subject heading in the upper right hand corner. Following this are listed one or more entries in chronological order. Each entry consists of the headline followed by the citation. The citation consists of a code for the paper, the month, day, year, section and page. SPECIAL NOTE: Prior to beginning the index in 1974, the library did extensive clipping of both newspapers, with articles being clipped clear back to 1902. These clipping files are arranged in the same five sections and use the same subject headings as the index. They also include articles from other NC newspapers.
SIZE OF INDEX:  About 1200 to 1500 entries per month are added to the current index. This corresponds to about 800 new cards per year.
