SCOPE OF INDEX:  The index includes individuals, organizations and activities primarily in the Greater Muskegon area and, to a lesser extent, all of Muskegon County. Subject headings broadly include: ACCIDENTS; ART & ARTISTS; AWARDS; BUSINESS & INDUSTRY; CHURCHES; CITY & COUNTY GOVERNMENT; CRIME; INDIVIDUALS; LIBRARIES; MINORITY GROUPS; MUSIC & MUSICIANS; ORGANIZATIONS; POLITICS; SCHOOLS; SHIPS & SHIPWRECKS; SPORTS; VITAL STATISTICS; WEATHER and WRITERS. Daily sports scores, the weekly school page and obituaries (except for prominent people) are not indexed. Also included in the index are references to books about Muskegon, a picture collection of people and places, and scrapbooks of early newspaper clippings.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index in two sections: SUBJECTS and PERSONAL NAMES. Within each section the cards are filed in alphabetical order by subject or name. Each card consists of one or more entries in chronological order. Each entry consists of the headline followed by the citation. The citation consists of the name of the paper (unless it is the MUSKEGON CHRONICLE which is the only paper currently being indexed), followed by the month, day, year, page and column where the article will be found. Accompanying illustrations, portraits, charts are noted as well as editorials.
SIZE OF INDEX:  Approximately 250 entries per month are added to the current index. The index currently occupies 80 card catalogue drawers (63 drawers of subjects and 17 drawers of personal names).
