AVAILABILITY:  Two bound copies of the original are located at the Illinois State Historical Library. Microfilm copies of the original on 35mm positive film are available for purchase. The index occupies two reels: 1831-1850 and 1851-1860. The price is $8.50 per reel. Copies of the index and corresponding newspapers are available for public use in the Illinois State Historical Library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  "The compiler's goal has been to include every item pertaining to the State of Illinois; to any county, city, or other political subdivision thereof; to any body of water or watercourse within or bounding Illinois; to any inhabitant of the state (including items relating to any inhabitant before or after his time in Illinois); to any partnership, firm, company, corporation, society or similar organization within the State; to any visitor to the State, during his visit; and to any person, firm, etc., connected in any way with Illinois."
FORMAT OF INDEX:  The original is a book-form index in two volumes, 1831-1850 and 1851-1860. The page size is 10x14 inches. Copies of the index are 35mm microfilm. The index has about 1000 pages in total. Entries are arranged in alphabetical order, with both subjects and personal names interfiled in the same index. Entries consist of the headline or a brief annotation, followed by the citation. Within each subject, the entries are strung together, one after another, in chronological order. The citation consists of the date (mo-dy-yr), page and column.
SIZE OF INDEX:  Over 27,000 subject headings in the index. No estimate of entry count.
