SCOPE OF INDEX:  The index covers primarily the town of Amherst, local people and organizations. Not every item in the newspaper is recorded. Some regional news is included if Amherst is involved. Excluded from the index are sports events, routine organization affairs, minor events and news about other towns. The out-of-town newspapers were indexed for Amherst news only.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index with all entry cards in a single alphabetic order. There are usually several entries on each card. Entries consist of a brief annotation followed by a code for the newspaper and then the date (mo-dy-yr) where the article appeared. Photos or other illustrations are noted.
SIZE OF INDEX:  About 50 entries per month are added to the current index, which currently occupies over 15 file drawers.
