AVAILABILITY:  A published index. The current year is available on a subscription basis and consists of 11 monthly issues plus an annual cumulation. Annual volumes back through 1972 are also available. Write for prices.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  News of the state and of the southwest region of Michigan is indexed, with special emphasis on the greater Kalamazoo area. Among the subjects treated are schools; business and industry; state and local government issues; feature stories on local athletes and teams; cultural events, including locally reviewed films, plays, art exhibits, and concerts; significant news of local clubs and organizations; wedding anniversaries; obituaries; significant church events; people in the news; letters to the editor; and editorials on local subjects. Omitted from the index are national and international news stories, unless of local significance; most advertising; birth, death, marriage, and divorce notices; engagements and weddings; announcements of routine events and meetings; social calenders; routine sports events; non-news items, such as household hints, recipes, personal advice columns, and travel.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A book-form index, with two columns per page, consisting of photo reduced computer printout. The index is divided into two sections: SUBJECT INDEX and PERSONAL NAME INDEX. Within each section, the entries are arranged in alphabetical order by subject or name and then in chronological order. Each entry is complete on a single line and consists of the headline or a brief annotation, followed by the citation. The citation consists of the date (mo/dy/yr), the section, page and column. An asterisk (*) preceding the citation indicates that a photo or diagram accompanies the article.
SIZE OF INDEX:  The 1977 annual index consisted of 82 pages of subject entries and 27 pages of personal name entries. This represents approximately 14000 subject entries and 6500 personal name entries.
