See the INTRODUCTION for the methodology used in compiling the LATHROP REPORT.

AVAILABILITY:  Only two copies of this card file index exist. They must be used in the Kansas State Historical Society library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  The index emphasizes only Russell county and municipality news. State, national and international news items were excluded. Subjects covered range from Agriculture to Weather. Also included are vital statistics under the subject headings: MARRIAGES, BIRTHS, and DEATHS. Since the compiler was a Kansas district court judge, an emphasis was placed on legal proceedings. How well Judge Ruppenthal indexed the four newspapers is not determined. Most items included are from the Russell Record.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index arranged in alphabetical order by subject. Personal names are NOT used as subject headings. Each card contains only one entry. It consists of the subject heading, a brief description of the article and the citation. The citation consists of the newspaper name (which is usually typed or stamped on the upper right hand corner of the card), and the year, month, day, page and column which are typed on the last line of the card.
SIZE OF INDEX:  Housed in 18 drawers.
