See the INTRODUCTION for the methodology used in compiling the LATHROP REPORT.

NEWSPAPERS INDEXED:
  • MARYLAND GAZETTE Annapolis MD 1727-1746
COMPILER:  Louis Dow Scisco

Baltimore MD 21201
Telephone: (301) 685-3750
AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this book-form index exists. It must be used in the Maryland Historical Society Library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  Heavy emphasis on personal names mentioned in the paper, but also covers many subjects of interest to the colonies and Maryland in particular. The following subject headings give an idea of the scope of topics covered by the index: ACCIDENTS, ADVERTISEMENTS, AMUSEMENTS, BOOKS FOR SALE, BOOKS OWNED, CHURCH AFFAIRS, CONVICT SERVANTS, CRIME, CURRENCY, DEATHS, FIRES, FUGITIVES FROM SERVICE, HORSES, IRON INDUSTRY, LAND CUSTOM-HOUSE, GENERAL ASSEMBLY, PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT, SHIPS, MEDICAL, NEGROES, POST SERVICE, SCHOOLS, SLAVE TRADE, SPORTS, TOBACCO, TRANSPORTATION and WEATHER.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A book-form index consisting of typewritten 10¼ x 12½ inch pages, bound into 4 volumes with 377 pages in total. It appears that each year of the newspaper has been indexed separately. Each index is arranged in alphabetical order with both subject and personal names in the same alphabet. A check list of all personal names which appear in the index and all subject headings used in the index has been provided for each of the annual indexes. Entries consist of the headline or a brief description, followed by the citation. The citation consists of the issue number, the page and the column where the article appeared. A chart at the front of each index translates the issues number into an equivalent month, day and year.
