SCOPE OF INDEX:  This index follows in the main the plan of the Index to The Western Emigrant (see LATHROP REPORT 1131E). Only local items have been included. Two appendices contain a business directory and a check list of all extant issues of the DEMOCRATIC HERALD. The DEMOCRATIC HERALD is the succesor to the MICHIGAN ARGUS. NOTE: See LATHROP REPORT 1131E for a more comprehensive scope note as it appeared in the PREFACE of the Index to The Western Emigrant.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A book-form index typewritten on 8½x11 inch pages. The entries are arranged in alphabetical order by name and subject. The index also contains a classified list of business and professions in addition to the alphabetical listing. Each entry consist of the subject heading, followed by a brief description of each article having to do with that subject (or personal name). Following the description is the month, day and year where the article appeared.
