SCOPE OF INDEX: An index to all Louisiana news. Particularly strong on the Battle of New Orleans and the Civil War. All of the following types of stories are indexed: Fatal accidents; major crimes; articles about local & state governments and politics; historical articles; important civic events; cultural events; news items concerning persons with Louisiana background (regardless of dateline); and articles aobut education. The following types of stories are indexed selectively: Sports stories which are also news stories; social events which are news stories; real estate stories concerning historic sites or buildings; real estate stories concerning opening of new subdivisions, shopping centers, etc; reviews of books by people from Louisiana; economic & business news; visitors to state; major conventions; editorials and cartoons pertaining to any of the above; and any columns pertaining to any of the above. |
FORMAT OF INDEX: A 3x5 card file index divided into three sections: SUBJECT, PERSONAL NAME and BUSINESSES. Within each file, the cards are arranged in alphabetical order. Most cards contain a single entry. Each entry consists of the headline and in some cases a brief summary of the article, followed by the citation. The citation consists of the name of the paper (abbreviated), the date (mo-dy-yr), section, page and column. There are about 528,000 cards in total. |
SIZE OF INDEX: About 650,000 entries in the total index. |
