AVAILABILITY:  Only one copy of this card file index exists. It must be used in the New Orleans Public Library. Photocopies of index cards (approximately 5 per 8½x11 inch sheet) will be made at prevailing rates.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  Only obituaries have been indexed from these newspapers. However, the index also includes references to biographical sketches of Louisianians that have appeared in published books. Currently the project is being carried on by volunteers with emphasis on filling in the gaps from earlier years. For deaths after 1972, the library relies on computer printouts of the death indexes as produced by the Louisiana Department of Health and Human Resources.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A 3x5 card file index in alphabetical order by personal name. Usually only one entry per card. Each card consists of the name, age, date of death, and (occasionally) a brief biographical note. The citation consists of the newspaper name (abbreviated), the date (mo-dy-yr), page and column. Where a portrait is included (in printed works), "Louisiana Portrait" is noted.
SIZE OF INDEX:  Approximately 530,000 cards in the current file.
